Neil Johnson, Engineering Fellow - Research & Technology

Biography

Neil gained his BSc and PhD at the University of Leeds, UK, where he also worked as a Research Fellow before joining InfraRed Integrated Systems Ltd (Irisys) in 1999. In 2012, Irisys was acquired by the Fluke Corporation, and in 2023, Neil joined Fluke Engineering's Research & Technology team. At Irisys, Neil was Chief Software Scientist, primarily responsible for developing computer vision and machine learning-based detection algorithms. Neil's wide-ranging contributions to the business played a pivotal role in its growth from a new startup to one of the largest global providers of people-counting and occupancy-monitoring solutions. In his current role, Neil is helping spearhead Fluke's adoption of AI and ML technologies within Engineering and building internal AI and ML capability.

Published Works

Neil has nearly 20 published works, including papers on behavior models, infra-red detection, and even a sensor to detect the falls of the elderly. In addition, he has six US patents. You can view some of them here.


Awards

Neil’s Ph.D. thesis, ‘Learning Object Behavior Models,’ won the 1999 Sullivan Doctoral Thesis Prize – awarded annually by the British Machine Vision Association for the best doctoral dissertation in computer or natural vision.


Accomplishments

Standouts in Neil’s career include representing Irisys at a reception at Buckingham Palace for winners of the 2012 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, Innovation and the great honor of being appointed a Fluke Fellow in recognition of his contributions to Irisys and Fluke.
